Green Up Your Routine
Earth Day, which started in the United States in 1970, is a time for events and activities around the world that demonstrate support for the Earth and the environment. If you think about environmentally-minded people, you don't always think about cosmetics. But making a few changes to your routines and the products you use can benefit both you and the environment.
Here are a few tips to being a more Eco-conscious consumer:
Consider Packaging: Look for beauty products that minimize the amount of packaging. Does a bottle of moisturizer really need to be sol in a brand new (not recycled) cardboard box and/or shrink wrapped in plastic? Probably not. There are plenty of products in the market that are packaged in recycled materials or that come in a minimal amount of cardboard. Check that packaging can either be recycled, reused, or refilled.
Be a Do-Gooder: Chances are, you're going to want to buy a new lipstick sometime this year. Instead of just buying another product, look for one that gives back. There are plenty of brands that donate a portion of their sales to charity. Do a little bit of research to see what's available and which organizations are receiving donations from companies that sell beauty products.
Go Organic: Organic isn't just for eating. So many beauty products now are packed with organic ingredients that are better for the Earth and better for you.
Think of the Animals: I know PETA is not a perfect organization, but that doesn't mean they entirely evil. If you hate the idea of your blush being tested on animals, consult PETA's Conscious Consumer list to find out which beauty companies are cruelty free. While you're at it, tweet or send an email to all the companies that STILL think it's acceptable to test on animals and ask them to stop. Large companies only care about their bottomline--if their habits are costing them customers (and money!) maybe, just maybe, they'll change their ways.
