Sticker Shock

So...I was flipping through my most recent mailing from Ulta today, checking out the deals and new beauty products--doing general Kiss and Makeup research.

Anyway, I saw this great new product:

Peter Thomas Roth
Lashes To Die For
Longer, thicker, fuller lashes!
Revolutionary, patent-pending complex dramatically enhances appearance of natural lashes. Within just 4-8 weeks, independent consumer studies prove 64% saw longer lashes, 67% saw thicker and fuller lashes, based on consumer studies.

My initial response? Awesome! Who can't use thicker, longer, fuller lashes? I want to try this out for all my dedicated Kiss and Makeup readers! It would be a win-win: I would try out a new product and get the possible benefit, and you all would be able to decide whether or not to buy this product based on my field work.

I was ready to make my purchase...

And then I saw how much Lashes To Die For would set me back: $125. For one stinking tube. $125.

Yeah...I think I'll pass. Sorry. My budget cannot justify a $125 test run.

Damn economy!

Haircut 100

I am recovering from being sick with a cold/flu and I'm also slowly getting back into work mode after being away for a week of break. During my scheduled week off, I made an appointment for a much needed hair cut and color. Because of my illness, I was forced to cancel and my hair is now an unruly mess. I am in desperate need of a restyle.

When it comes to hair, I wonder: how many of us have a signature look? It's all too easy to get used to a particular style....hell--people have hair ruts that last decades! If you have a signature hair style, do you actually like your style? Or are you ready for a change?

Me? On a good day, my hair style is inspired by Veronica Lake (above). On a bad day, I look more like Dave Mustaine from Megadeth (below), as I mentioned before. Apart from getting bangs in the Winter of '07-'08, my hair hasn't changed drastically in years...it's always been blonde, shoulder length, and pretty far from fabulous.

I think I want a change! If you're like me and need to change it up, here are some tips for getting a new style that you'll love:
  • First, figure out how much change you're willing to undergo. Sure, it might seem exciting to go from bleach-blonde to jet black overnight, but that sort of change could be more shocking than you're ready for. Make sure you are able to deal with seeing yourself in a whole new way. Also, take into consideration how your new look will fit in with your professional and personal life.
  • Be realistic. If you don't like to spend a lot of time styling your hair, you may not want to pick a 'do that will require hours of complex styling. Also take into consideration things you cannot change, like your hair's texture.
  • Flip through magazines or look online for hairstyles you might like. Don't get too hung up with a model's hair color...focus on the cut, the style, the profile, etc.
  • Take several options in with you when you see your stylist. Talk about what you want, and listen to the stylist's advice. If they don't think a pixie-cut will work for your face/hair type, they'll tell you. Your stylist wants you to look good and to be happy with your hair in the long term. They're professionals and they know what they're doing--listen to them!
  • If you don't have (or don't like) a stylist, ask friends, family, or co-workers where they go. Referrals are everything!
  • Pay attention when your hair is being dried and styled. Ask for step-by-step advice on recreating the look at home. This part is essential. It's all too easy to sit back in the stylist's chair and zone out or gossip while you're being worked on. Not good! Snap out of it and pay attention.
  • Give yourself time to get used to your new style. Your hair might go into shock after a drastic change. You may not be accustomed to seeing yourself with a different color/style. Don't panic if you don't love your cut/color immediately. Change can be jarring at first!
Ok--now I need to call my salon and get myself rescheduled...NOW!

Almost Back...

Okay...I am back from my mini-vacation to the Washington Coast. We had beautiful weather and an extremely relaxing break. Now? It's back to work and back to my normal routine. *Sigh*

I'll also get back to posting regularly here on Kiss and Makeup. I have plenty of beauty news to share, and I've been away for far too long.

Hang tight and I'll be back soon. Til then, happy Monday!

Hot Mess

Holy guacamole. I didn't mean to be away from writing my blog THIS long, but wow...I guess stuff happens. I've been sick...sick...sick the past few days. What a way to spend a birthday, huh? What started as a cold turned into a raging fever and a lost day of lying in bed, sweating, having bizarre fever dreams. Thankfully I am (slowly) on the mend. I am now just congested. My nose is bright red from all the blowing (let me say: Kleenex Lotion Tissues are a god send!), and I sound like a smoker when I cough since my chest is so filled with gunk. Pleasant.

On to a more positive topic: It's time to announce my Beau Bain Bath Bomb winners! Woo-hoo!! Congratulations to: Lisa, Irielle, and Regina. You have each won a super-fabulous bath bomb. Please email me at asklydia@hotmail.com so I can get your prize to you.

At the rate I'm going, I am not entirely sure WHEN I'll be back with updates...could be tomorrow, later this week, or first thing next week. I'm doing the best I can...and I'll be back as soon as I can hack it.

Ok--stay well, keep reading, oh, and if you have any beauty product recommendations you want to end my way, shoot me an email (asklydia@hotmail.com), follow me on twitter, or friend me on facebook....whatevs.

Don't Forget To Enter!

Sorry! I don't have time for a proper post today. My office is closed all next week for Mid-Winter Break (the one perk of working in education!) so this week has been insane. It always works that way. Just before our time off, everything boils over and we have crazy things that must get done NOW. Work is like Whack-a-Mole. *sigh*

Anyway...enough of my complaining. I am just here to remind you to enter my Beau Bain Bath Bomb giveaway. Click here for the details. Do it! You know you want to. Who wouldn't want to soak up some bath bomby goodness?

I have a very full weekend ahead of me so I may not get back to writing new blog entries until after the 16th. So...happy Valentine's Day!

Get Ready for Valentine's Day

I'm not really much of a fan of Valentine's Day. I guess I just feel like I don't need a special day to tell my husband how much I love him. Because honestly? I love him more than I've ever loved anyone or anything else ever...every single day of the year. And I think he knows that.

Some people go crazy on Valentine's Day and really go all out. They buy flowers, jewelry, chocolate, and pay for fancy-schmancy dinners. Good for them! Why not! Right now, were so buried under the mountain of bad news that it might be fun to forget all the seriousness of the world and focus only on love.

If you're not like me and you celebrate February 14th, here are some suggestions for you:

WHIP YOUR SKIN INTO SHAPE WITH ST. IVES
Don't let dry, flaky winter skin stand in your way of a romantic evening. To get irresistably touchable skin, all you need to do is pick up a few St. Ives products. First, use St. Ives Whipped Silk Body Wash. This wash offers a uniquely luxurious lather that deep cleans as it provides skin with essential moisture. The unique formula is whipped with vitamins and natural emollients to create a soft, light cream that cleanses without over drying for an indulgent shower experience.

After your shower, use St. Ives Whipped Silk Intense Body Moisturizer from head to toe. This soft, light textured cream glides on easily and absorbs quickly without a greasy feel. Hydrolyzed Silk Protein delivers therapeutic moisture, while vitamins and natural emollients soften and smooth skin to a silky finish.

SWEETEN UP WITH MARK!
Valentine's Day is one of the sweeter holidays of the year. And you can make it even sweeter with a few goodies from mark. Check out:

  • Candy Kisses Lip Glosses ($10 set) – This set includes three delectable and creamy lip glosses in a portable "candy-like" clear pot. Each gloss is deliciously scented like your favorite desserts!
  • Kissinks Lip Tintmarker ($7) – Need some kissproof color, quick? Now your lips can really make a lasting mark! These Lip Tintmarkers are all you need for a semi-permanent, yet see-through lip stain that lasts for hours. It’s so long-lasting, you’ll find that you won’t need to reapply for the rest of the day!
  • Sweetheart Deal Kits ($20) – These two different collections contain four coordinating shades that add up to a flirty look for Valentine's Day – or any day!
I'll have more Valentine's ideas for you tomorrow!

Beau Bain for a Beautiful Bath (GIVEAWAY!)

Looking for something to make your bath the bomb? Then check out a new Portland, Oregon based company--Beau Bain (French for Beautiful Bath)--and their line of luxurious bath bombs.

I am a firm believer in hydrotherapy and the healing benefits of water. When I'm stressed out or need some time to get my thoughts together, I often retreat to my shower or bathtub. There's something about hot water and a steamy room that makes me feel better.

The other day I was feeling a bit worn after a long day at work. I grabbed a Lavender and Black Amber bath bomb from Beau Bain, tossed it in my tub, and soaked my cares away. The bomb smelled amazing and it left my skin feeling soft and moisturized. Beau Bain's bath bomb turned my bathroom into a spa for one...and it was perfect.

If you want to indulge yourself with a yummy bath bomb, check out the Beau Bain website. They also make body scrubs and washes to soothe your soul and to treat your body right.

Or you can just leave a comment here on this blog entry, because I am giving away three Beau Bain bath bombs! Up for grabs are three scents: White Tea and Ginger, Lavender and Black Amber, and Juicy Peach. Be sure to include your name and a way to contact you when you comment. You have until Monday, February 16th (my birthday!) to enter. Oh, and if you don't want to leave a comment, you can always just send an email to me at asklydia@hotmail.com.

Good luck!

Pampering Without the Hefty Price

Okay, so the economy is in the toilet. We all know it, and we're all having to cut back in order to get through these tough times. But cutting back doesn't mean you have to be missing out. So you can't afford to get your regular mani/pedi? No problem! Just do your nails yourself.

Sure, at-home manis and pedis may sound difficult and uninspiring, but thanks to the Ms. Manicure and Ms. Pedicure line of nail products, you can pick up some fun and pretty tools without breaking the bank. All of their products are packaged in cute and sassy pink and black, and nothing is over $12.99! Here are some of my favorites from the Ms. Manicure line:

Ms. Maincure Handy Dandy Mani, $9.99: this kit has it all--cuticle nippers, nail cutters, nail scissors, orange sticks, nail brush, washable salon board, a 4-way nail buffer, and slant tip tweezers...all in a compact zippered case. It also includes insider tips and hints. What more could you want?

Ms. Pedicure Smoothy Groovy, $2.99: this super cute pink and purple 2-in-1 foot brush and pumice is designed to be used in the shower. It will buff off all those nasty calluses and dry patches, leaving behind smooth feet and spa-quality results.

Ms. Manicure block Party 4-Way Buffer, $.99: for less than a buck, this tool has four surfaces that will smooth out your nails, making them look shiny, healthy, and instantly manicured.

Check out the Ms. Manicure and Ms. Pedicure websites for store information.

Zen Winner!

Congratulations to K8! She is the winner of my Shiseido Zen giveaway. K8, be on the look out for an email from me. For the rest of you: I'll be doing another giveaway next week, so check back on Monday for details!

Beauty Product of the Week: Colossal Volum'Express

What is it? Maybelline The Colossal Volum'Express mascara gives you, "9x the volume in one coat with no clumps. Contains collagen. Ophthalmologist tested, contact lens safe. The MegaBrush instantly zooms on 9x the volume in one stroke, without clumps." Available at drugstores and big box stores for less than $6.

What did you think? If you've read my blog for any amount of time, you no doubt know that I love mascara...and that I try out a lot of mascaras from every price range. I must say, when it comes to mascara, Maybelline cannot be beat.

Colossal Volum'Express is a very decent product. I like the full brush--it makes mascara application quick and easy. With one coat, my lashes are longer and thicker and perfect for a day look. For night, two coats do the trick and result in almost fake-looking lashes.

With the economy the way it currently is, Colossal Volum'Express is the perfect price. Even though it's a drugstore brand product, this mascara can go head-to-head (or would that be brush-to-brush?) with the pricier "prestige" mascaras.

Other things I like: the bright yellow tube stands out in my cluttered, over-stuffed makeup bag so it's easy to find. Also, unlike some mascaras, this one doesn't have that nasty inky/tarry smell...and that's a good thing.

The final verdict? Yet another decent mascara offering from Maybelline! This is an affordable, effective mascara that is perfect for every day use. What's not to like?

Get Your Zen On!

Don't forget! This is your last day to enter my Shiseido Zen Perfumed Shower Gel giveaway! Leave a comment on this post for your chance to win. One winner, selected at random, will be announced tomorrow. And be on the lookout for another giveaway in the coming days!

Product Preview: Graham Webb Advanced Therapy

I like to say that I am blonde naturally and even blonder chemically. Yes...I am a dyer. And a blow dryer. And to make matters worse, I wash my hair every single stinking day even though I know better. What's more, I'm an occasional flat iron-er. Yup...I'm tough on may hair.

But all is not lost! Thanks to the Graham Webb Advanced Therapy system of products, I can turn my torturous heat styling into a beneficial conditioning treatment. How? Easy! The Advanced Therapy products contain something call Thermacore Complex that restore dried out, over processed hair into silky goodness. It also contains natural emollients and humectants that add manageability and silk proteins and keratin amino acids that build extra protection and moisture within the hair.

I'm going to try out the Graham Webb Advanced Therapy Treatment later this week. It is a two-part formula that is used after normal shampooing/conditioning. All I need to do is mix both parts in my hair, saturate my locks for 3-5 minutes, and then style it as usual.

The Advanced Therapy Treatment is offered at salons, but can now be purchased for at-home use. You can use it weekly or as often as needed to restore hair back to its healthy, shiny state. A 1 oz sachet (one treatment) costs $4.50 and is available at professional salons nationwide. Click here for a salon near you.

I'll be back in a few days to let you know what I thought of this product and if it left my hair silky and beautiful!

The Nature of Beautiful Hair

It's no secret that I am a fan of Pantene. I have used their products for years and have always had great results, so I was excited to try out their new line of Nature Fusion shampoos and conditioners. If you're constantly fighting frizz or need to balance out the moisture in your hair, you'll want to try out these two new lines:
SMOOTH VITALITY
What Pantene says about it: "Fight frizz for a smooth, silky feel. The new Smooth Vitality Collection, with a blend of cassia, avocado, bamboo and grapeseed, transforms frizzy hair into smooth, sleek style."

What I say: I had my husband try out Smooth Vitality. He has very long, very beautiful hair. However, he tends to have a problem with frizz. I got him to use a frizz-taming serum every day--what he refers to as his "product"--but he hates to go through an extra step.
Bold
He switched from his usual Head and Shoulders and liked the Pantene. He said he liked the smell of the Smooth Vitality products and that his hair didn't seem as frizzy. A big bonus for him was that he didn't have to use his "product." His hair has been looking shiny and healthy, so I think Smooth Vitality is a winner for him.
MOISTURE BALANCE
What Pantene says about it: "This shampoo and conditioner system moisturizes hair for touchable softness. The new Moisture Balance Collection with a blend of cassia, ginger, calendula and aloe vera, helps to strengthen and protect hair against damage while leaving it naturally radiant."

What I say: I thought I'd give this one a try since I have highlighted hair that I blow dry every day. Moisture Balance shampoo and conditioner gave me everything I love about Pantene--a decent scent and exceptional lather. My hair feels soft and looks shiny and well conditioned. I like that the products are also protecting my locks against any further damage that I may be putting my hair through.

Both the Smooth Vitality and Moisture Balance line of products are available everywhere Pantene products are sold.

And if you're scared to use Pantene products because you think they're bad for your hair, get over it. Let me do a little myth debunking:

MYTH:
PANTENE PRO-V LEAVES BEHIND A LAYER OF WAX ON YOUR HAIR AND CREATES A WAXY BUILD-UP OVER TIME.

FACTS:
  1. Pantene Shampoos and Conditioners do not contain wax. Although Pantene has unique and proprietary ingredients based on recent technological advances, the classes of ingredients (silicones, fatty alcohols, cationic polymers and cationic surfactants) are used consistently across the hair care industry.
  2. Pantene Shampoo and Conditioners do leave behind conditioning ingredients (such as coacervate conditioning complexes, liquid crystals, and terminal amino silicones) for healthy hair benefits such as moisturization, damage protection and shine. Pantene shampoos and conditioners are designed to work together, depositing conditioning ingredients that will wash out of the hair with the next shampoo.
  3. When women feel they have build-up from their shampoos and conditioners, it is often a sign that the products they are using are too heavy for their hair, and they may be more satisfied with a lower conditioning version.
And there you have it!

Seek Professional Help!

If you've read my blog for any length of time, you'll know that I am left-leaning politically speaking, and that I do not support our former President's "preemptive" war on terror. However, I am currently waging my very own preemptive war...a war against wrinkles and other signs of aging. And I'm opting for the big guns. I'm using the new line of Olay Professional Pro-X products. These products are available this month, so be on the lookout for them at your favorite store (places like Target, drugstores, and other locations where you usually buy Olay products).

Here are the products I'm using:

Olay Professional Pro-X Age Repair Lotion with SPF 30: a daily full-face UVB and UVA
moisturizer that was designed by the Olay Professional Alliance for Skin Care Innovation, a
group of renowned dermatologists and Olay Scientists, and was subject to rigorous development
and clinical testing. Olay Professional Pro-X Age Repair Lotion with SPF 30 provides
broad spectrum sun protection, moisturization and anti-aging benefits. $42.00 for 2.5 oz.

Olay Professional Pro-X Deep Wrinkle Treatment: a targeted treatment for the deepest
wrinkles, containing the highest concentration of Pro-retinol and niacinamide available
through Olay. It utilizes a multiple-technology approach to penetrate deep into the
skin’s surface, combating the appearance of wrinkles and intensely hydrating to allow the natural production of collagen. $42.00 for 1 oz.

Olay Professional Pro-X Wrinkle Smoothing Cream: a nighttime full-face moisturizer
that is professionally designed to help improve skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines
and wrinkles. It utilizes a multiple-technology approach to smooth uneven texture
and strengthen skin’s stratum corneum with moisture, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. $42.00 for 1.7 oz.

Olay's Professional line also includes a Hydra Firming Cream, a Discoloration Fighting Concentration, and an Eye Restoration Complex.

So far, I am very impressed with this line of products. They make my skin feel very smooth, very hydrated, and very touchable. I like that the lotions have almost no fragrance and don't include any weird dyes. As an added bonus, the daytime age repair lotion includes SPF 30...a must since we all know that the sun is a dreaded source of the signs of premature aging.

I've trusted Olay products for years now, and their Professional line of products are impressive. You don't need to buy super-expensive products or go to an exclusive spa to get great results. All you need to do is check out Olay and use their products regularly. You'll be happy you did! Oh, and be sure to check out their website for valuable savings!

Nailed!

There are so many nail colors on the market that it's impossible to find a shade that doesn't suit your mood, match your eyes, or reflect whatever color your aura is at the moment. And the good folks at OPI are determined to keep our lacquer choices plentiful. Here are some new collections to check out:

South Beach Collection
Available on February 4th, OPI is launching their Spring 2009 line, their South Beach Collection. Here are the shades:
  • Done Out In Deco: lilac (crème)
  • Clubbing Til Sunrise: tangerine (shimmer)
  • Suzi & The Lifeguard: pink (shimmer)
  • Conga-Line Coral: orange-rose (shimmer)
  • Overexposed In South Beach: purple (shimmer)
  • Bronzed To Perfection: brown (shimmer)
  • Party In My Cabana: pink (crème)
  • Sand In My Suit: nude (frost)
  • Paint My Moji-Toes Red: red (crème)
  • Miami Beet: violet (crème)
  • OPI On Collins Ave. : red orange (crème)
  • Feelin’ Hot-Hot-Hot!: flamingo pink (crème)
I'm personally not inspired by this collection. Maybe it's just me, but nothing "South Beach" really sends me. Frosty nail colors? Pastels? Meh. If this is the trend that Spring/Summer fashion is headed towards I'm not going to be a happy consumer. If I had to pick a shade, I'd opt for Paint My Moji-Toes...I guess.

90210 Collection
I mentioned this awhile ago and completely forgot about it. Similarly, I watched a few episodes of the "new" 90210 and then quickly lost interest in the next class of West Beverly High. Maybe I'm just too old...whatever. If you're still watching 90210 and want to have nails inspired by the cool kids, check out these shades:

Queen of West Web-erly: A purple shimmery color inspired by Kelly's little sister, the blogger.

Sweet as Annie-Thing: A "lollipop" red inspired by fresh from the mid-west (or wherever) female protagonist. Is it just me or does Annie look a little long in the tooth to be a high school girl?

Pretty and Privileged: A ruby red for the entitled. I think they should have called it Petty and Privileged, but that's just me!

My pick out of this collection? Probably Queen of West Web-erly. I'm in a purple phase at the moment.
