New Year, New You: Preparing for Change

With a new year upon us, many of us may feel the urge to make some changes to our beauty routines. Whether it's something subtle like changing your "signature" lip gloss to something drastic like changing your hair color, change can be a little scary. You might be worried about what other people will think or worse, being stuck with something you hate.

Over the next few days, I'll be doing some entries with tips and tricks for updating your look, but here are some things to consider if you're contemplating a beauty change for 2007:
  • What is your motivation for making this change? Whether you're just bored with your current routine or in need of simplification, your needs should determine how much you want to change.
  • Can you honestly determine what's currently working and what isn't? Now may be a good time to take an objective look at your "look" to see what you like, what looks right, and what can be left behind. Often, a small tweak is all you need.
  • What sort of resources do you need to make a change? If you're pressed for time, you probably shouldn't be considering changing your hair to a style that will take a lot of effort to maintain. Strapped for cash? Stay away from the department store products--your budget will thank for you going to Target for cosmetics instead!
  • What happens if you hate what you do? My feeling is that the worst that can happen is that you have a new hair color or style you loathe, a lipstick that looks horrid, or an eyeshadow that isn't a good match for your coloring So? Hair always grows back and believe me, you wouldn't be the only person out there who has a drawer full of "what was I thinking?" products.
In the second season of Project Runway, one of the designers/contestants, Santino, sang a little jingle: Relax, it's just fashion! And the same can be said for a make over: Relax, it's just beauty! This is the one thing in life that can be purely fun!

Tomorrow: Quick steps for updating your face.
