How To Wear Red Lipstick

Red lipstick is a beauty classic. It evokes a sense of glamour like no other cosmetic. With the holiday season now upon us, nothing can dress up an outfit like perfect red lips. But finding the right red for your skin tone can be a bit challenging. Here are some hints:

  • First, figure out your true skin tone (pale, dark, medium) and your current hair color (notice I didn't say your natural hair color!).
  • Next, determine whether you are a warm or a cool. According to Real Simple magazine, if the veins along the inside of your wrist are greenish, you are warm. If the veins appear bluish, you are a cool (like me!).
  • Warm skinned women should opt for yellow or orange based reds.
  • Cool gals should look for reds that are pink or blue based.
  • Once you have decided all these factors, pick up a copy of the December issue of Real Simple to see their 2-page spread of hair and skin appropriate reds . I have it scanned below, but its a bit small (click to make it a bit bigger).
Now that you have the right color, you have to take some care when you apply your lipstick. Follow these rules:

  • If you have thin lips, avoid dark reds. Your lips will look smaller under all that color!
  • If you are really accenting your lips, don't spend too much time making up your eyes--it's one or the other, not both!
  • Don't use a red lipliner. If you must use a liner, try an invisible liner or one that is close to the natural color of your lips.
  • Check your teeth! Nothing can ruin the polished look of beautiful red lips like a smudge of red across your pearly whites. Eeew!
Now go out there and knock them dead with your pretty new look!
